Pyaaz Pakode (Onion Fritters)

Pyaaz ke pakode -commonly known as onion fritters in English- is a tea-time favourite in India. It is an important dish representing the Indian street food culture and goes perfectly well with a warm cup of tea or coffee. It is often served with a tamarind sauce or mint sauce, which adds tanginess to this savoury dish!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Gram Flour

  • 2 Tbsp Rice flour

  • 2 – 3 medium Onions sliced thinly

  • 2 Tbsp Coriander Leaves

  • 10 – 15 Curry Leaves

  • 5 – 6 Green Chilies finely chopped

  • 1 crushed Ginger

  • ½ tsp Red Chilli Powder

  • ½ tsp Cumin Seeds

  • ¼ tsp Baking Soda

  • 5 – 7 tsp Water as needed to make the batter

  • Oil for frying

Directions:

  1. In a wide add the gram flour, rice flour, and baking soda. Mix well.

  2. Now add the rest of the ingredients except the water. Add salt, chilli powder, cumin seeds, coriander, onions sliced, curry leaves, coarse ginger, and chopped green chillies.

  3. With the help of a spoon mix these ingredients.

  4. Then add water little by little until all the onions slices are covered with the batter.

  5. Now in a deep pan, heat oil for frying. Fry the coated onion slices until they are cooked on both sides.

  6. Once the fritters are golden-brown, it means they have been fried to perfection. 

  7. Serve hot, with either a mint or tamarind sauce!
