Moong Dal Halwa

Moong dal halwa is a famous Indian dessert recipe. It is mostly prepared in the winter months because its richness is believed to keep the body warm and protect it from the bitter cold. It is also a celebratory dish and prepared on the auspicious Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup moong dal (green gram lentil)

  • ½ cup ghee (clarified butter)

  • 1 cup warm milk

  • 1 cup + 1 Tbsp warm water

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 2 Tbsp chopped walnuts/almonds

  • 2 Tbsp golden raisins

Directions:

  1. Soak the moong dal in water for 3-4 hours. Drain well.

  2. Blend the dal in a blender with 1 tbsp of water.

  3. Heat the ghee in a kadhai or big pan, and add the dal paste. Cook on medium heat for at least 25 minutes.

  4. Add the warm milk and warm water in the pan with the paste and stir it on medium heat for 5-7 minutes.

  5. Add the sugar, walnuts/almonds, and raisins and cook for another 10 minutes while stirring continuously.

  6. Once ready, take the halwa off the heat and serve hot!
